Nice version. I’ve only ever heard this song sung by Elvis up to now.

The hit versions were by Adam Wade (#7 Pop -1961) and Sonny James (#1 Country – 1966).

Probably one of the greatest voices in the history of country music. Sadly she never scored a solo hit. Her biggest chart successes included a two-sided 1951 top five duet with Hank Snow, “Down The Trail Of Achin’ Hearts” / “Bluebird Island” and a 1968 top five hit with Waylon Jennings, “I Got You.” A member of the Carter Family her voice was prominently featured on Johnny Cash’s classic 1962 recording of “Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord).” She performed extensive work as a backup vocalist for Cash and many other acts. The Complete Hank Williams CD set has an amazing recording of Anita from a 1952 Kate Smith Evening Hour television program performing “I Can’t Help It (If I’m Still In Love With You),” with Hank Williams.

Anita had an absolutely flawless voice and the fact that she never achieved solo success is one of the great tragedies of country music.

Anita was married for a time to Johnny Cash’s lead guitar player Bob Wooten. She passed away in 1999 at age of 66.
