Album Review: Dave Adkins – ‘Dave Adkins’

dave adkinsBig-voiced bluegrass singer Dave Adkins has just released a second solo album which is worth checking out. Musically this is solid bluegrass with a dominant banjo, but what makes it stand out is Adkins’ voice.

My favourite track is the stunning lost-love ballad ‘Foolosophy’, an outstanding song from two great writers – Larry Cordle and Chris Stapleton. Adkins’s magnificent vocal shows hitherto unguessed elements to his voice as he emotes on this bar room weeper:

Well, I’ve been spending all my nights just searching for some truth
In a bar room with a bottle just crying and trying to prove
That a man can find some peace of mind when a woman he loves leaves
That’s my lonesome heart in foolosophy

Well, I know if I keep drinking
That somehow I won’t hurt
And it won’t take forever to get me over her
Someday soon she’s coming back
It’s just what I believe
That’s my lonesome heart in foolosophy

I bet in a hundred years from now
My researching will show
That a jukebox, smoke and whiskey will heal a broken soul
No doubt I’ll be remembered as Hillbilly Socrates
With my lonesome heart in foolosophy

The mid-tempo ballad ‘Change Her Mind’, one of five on the album which Adkins wrote himself, is very good, with its protagonist’s hope of regaining lost love. He also wrote the cheerfully brisk gospel number ‘A Whole More To Tell’, and the attractive mid-paced love song ‘One And Only’.

Adkins wrote ‘You Don’t Have To Go To Be Gone’ with Paula Breedlove and Brink Brinkman; this is a strong song about a marriage which is hanging on in name only.

The tragic ‘Russell Fork River’ is an intense murder ballad with a twist which Adkins wrote with Dawn Kenny and David Morris. The actual murder is the swift judicial execution of a man believed to have drowned his sweetheart, whose death was actually an accident. The same trio wrote the trucking song ‘Turn And Burn’.

Another dramatic story song, ‘Emmaline’ takes us to Kentucky coal country and a cheating husband whose guilty heart takes him to his death – or has he faked his death to run away with his secret lover?

The subdued ‘Angel Song’ has a very pretty melody and a sad lyric about bereavement. ‘It’s Not Over (Til I Get Over You)’ is an emotional ballad co-written by the great Tom T Hall about facing an empty home after the protagonist’s wife has left.

‘Wasting Away’ is a pacy song written by the late Randall Hylton, and is decent without making the same impact as the ballads. More effectively, Adkins covers John Michael Montgomery’s 1990s country hit ‘Sold’, which works very well given an bluegrass treatment, and is very enjoyable.

This is an excellent bluegrass album from a singer with a strong and distinctive voice.

the way im livinIt’s not been the best of years for mainstream country music, but great music is still out there to be found if you’re willing to hunt it down. There was a plethora of great covers projects, including excellent offerings from Joey + Rory and Gene Watson, and a number of other fine records which just missed the cut in my top 10 selection.

Classic high lonesome bluegrass from a singer with a big, emotional voice.

9. J P Harris & The Tough Choices – ‘Home Is Where The Hurt Is
Authentic retro honky tonk with some great songs.

Best tracks: ‘Home Is Where The Hurt Is’, ‘Truck Stop Amphetamines’, ‘Every Little Piece’

Back on an independent label, Sunny Sweeney’s unbridled honky tonk with a modern twist is irresistible.

Best tracks: ‘You Don’t Know Your Husband’, ‘Backhanded Compliment’, ‘Sunday Dress

7. Fayssoux, ‘I Can’t Wait
A lovely mellow folk-country record.

Best tracks: ‘Mama’s Hungry Eyes’, ‘I Made A Friend Of A Flower Today’, ‘Golightly Creek’

6. Randy Travis – Influence Vol 2
The second instalment of Randy’s covers project, fortunately recorded before his recent health crisis was, unexpectedly, even better than the first one.

Best tracks: ‘Set ‘Em Up Joe’, ‘Are The Good Times Really Over’, ‘For The Good Times’

daylight and dark5. Jason Eady – ‘Daylight And Dark
Solid country music from a talented singer-songwriter I like more every tie I hear him. This was one of the year’s first releases, and it hasn’t lost its appeal for me.

Best tracks: ‘Whiskey And You’, ‘Liars And Fools’, ‘Late Night Diner

4. Rhonda Vincent – ‘Only Me
The bluegrass star offers a stellar selection of material. The packaging is a touch gimmicky, with two CDs in one packages, each containing just six tracks. One is billed as straight bluegrass, the other traditional country, but both are wonderful. My only criticism is that it would be nice to hear some new songs of this quality.

3. Jade Jack – ‘Off The Record
I was very impressed by fiddler/traditional country singer Jade’s debut album. Very much in the style of Amber Digby, this is packed full of heartbreak numbers, backed with fiddle and steel. It just squeezes in ahead of Rhonda thanks to the inclusion of original material.

lucky2. Suzy Bogguss – ‘Lucky
In a year which saw a lot of fine tribute and cover albums, this was the best of the lot. Suzy’s beautiful readings of Haggard songs are exquisite. This record is just lovely. The sensitive vocal interpretations are backed by delicately stripped down arrangements which shows that less is more.

1. Lee Ann Womack – ‘The Way I’m Livin
I was disappointed by Trisha Yearwood’s return, when she only recorded six new songs. But Lee Ann Womack did not disappoint, with that exquisite voice wrapped around 13 excellent songs. ‘Chances Are’, my favorite, is sublime. She sounds thoroughly revitalised by her move from the major labels and hankering after radio play to Sugar Hill’s focus on artistry. The result is magical.

Album Review: Dave Adkins – ‘Nothing To Lose’

nothing to loseBluegrass singer Dave Adkins has a powerful booming voice which grabs the listener’s attention from the first note and never lets go. This is his first solo album, and it is an impressive one which showcases the artist’s passionate vocals and his band’s excellent musicianship on some fine songs.  It was produced by the artist with Edgar Loudermilk and Mark Hodges, and they do a nice job providing pure bluegrass backings.

The soulful ‘Mistaken Heart’ has the protagonist awaking from past errors.  The upbeat ‘Put Some Grass In It’ modestly proclaims the joys of making bluegrass music, whether or not he’s a star. This one is highly entertaining.

The dramatically delivered and emotionally moving ballad ‘Don’t Pray That Way’ is a story song about a woman given a terminal diagnosis who unselfishly asks her husband not to pray for her, but for others:

Don’t ask for me to live one extra day

Don’t pray that way

Pray for those who’re scared and all alone

Pray for those who’s lost

They’ll find their way home

Very moving.

‘I Can’t Even Walk’ is an emotion-filled gospel tune with the protagonist declaring his own helplessness before God:

Down on my knees

Is where I learned to stand

I thought of myself as a mighty big man

But I can’t even walk

Without you holding my hand

‘Silence Is Golden’ is a passionate ballad about the heartbreak of a broken home with a wry payback to the lyric as the protagonist looks around at his empty house:

My net worth is growing

If silence is golden

‘Pretty Little Liar’ is a more subdued ballad about disillusionment with a spouse, which is well done but not quite as impressive as the bigger songs which seem to fit Adkins’s natural style better.  ‘Nothing To Lose’ picks up the tempo although the mood remains down.

‘Pike County Jail’ is a fast paced tale of an incarcerated moonshiner planning on changing his ways once he is released.  ‘Tennessee Twister’ and ‘At Least It Wasn’t Life’ are very well played and sung up-tempo numbers, but a little more generic.

A great cover of country classic ‘Tennessee Whiskey’ shows off Dave’s big voice and is a highlight.

Opening acappella, ‘Moonshine In Moonlight’ offers a fond memory of a churchgoing childhood.

I was very impressed by this album by an artist new to me, but whose voice marks him out.  I look forward to hearing more – and in the meantime I plan on checking out the album he recorded with former band Republik Steele.
