Mel was a great artist, who came along about ten years too soon for the advent of modern depression control medications. Fortunately, virtually all of his recordings are available on the various Gusto labels. – there is a nice 3 CD set that gets you 58 of his songs and a 2 CD set that overlaps this a little but gets you an additional 15 songs

Alas, the “advent of modern depression control medications,” has not curtailed suicide in the U.S., in any detectable manner. And middle-aged and older white men–a la Mel Street back then or Anthony Bourdain today–have the highest rates of taking their own lives.

Perhaps not in a statistically meaningful manner BUT it has helped some individuals. Depression runs strongly in my wife’s family and the suicidal thoughts several of them had, including my wife, no longer seem to plague them. There are other stressors in life so perhaps the medications have helped offset the increased stressors in modern day life
