This song was written by Bandy go-to songwriter “Whitey” Shafer together with Lefty Frizzell, when they were collaborating in the early ’70s. As a songwriting duo, they managed to come up with at least two songs that became country standards: “That’s the Way Love Goes,” and “I Never Go Around Mirrors.” Frizzell actually recorded and released the original versions of both “That’s the Way Love Goes” and “Mirrors,” (and had a #25 hit with the latter), but his recordings were not getting much attention at the time. (Johnny Rodriguez, Haggard, and Whitley had the most prominent versions of those songs.)
I’ve long-wondered if Frizzell ever made a recording of “Rodeo Clown.” (Was Lefty’s voice on the demo that was pitched to Moe?) I’d pay $20 to hear “Lefty the Rodeo Clown,” if such a recording exists. I think Lefty would have brought out the meaning and pathos in the lyrics in a way that Bandy barely touches.
