Sounds like a song Merle could have written. But it was actually written by Blaze Foley, a fascinating, tragic character. An acolyte of Townes Van Zandt, Foley had a checkered recording career (master tapes for one album were reportedly stolen from a van that he was living in; masters for another were reportedly confiscated by the D.E.A. in a narcotics bust). Blaze was shot dead in 1989 at age 39 in an Austin, Tx. establishment called the “Hole in the Wall.” The shooter, an acquaintance of Foley was prosecuted for murder, but he beat the rap on a claim of self-defense.
