Wow! John Conlee really hits this one out of the park. He even copies Ray’s inflections from the original 1969 recording for certain phrases. This song has always been one of my favorite Ray Price recordings. Because it was the single released just prior to “For The Good Times” in early 1970 it’s been lost in the shadows of Ray’s career hit. Written by Hank Cochran & Dave Kirby it contains some of the best lyrics ever created.
On this tribute version the arrangement, the band and the singers are all superb. The woman in the glasses seated next to Bill Anderson is Ray’s widow Janie Price.
Seen Mr Conlee in concert several times. Puts on a good show. Sounds great and is also a very nice man. Has always stayed afterwards to chat, take pictures, sign….
I was never a big John Conlee fan, but I think he’s become a bigger–and more important–figure now than he was in his heyday. I don’t think even Conlee could have guessed that he’d be the guy to “replace” Roy Acuff on the Opry.
