Classic Rewind: Sonny James – ‘Young Love’

The legendary Sonny James died on Monday at age 87. During his 30-year career, he scored 26 #1 hits. Sixteen of them occurred between 1967 and 1971. He is best known for this 1957 hit:

    I never actually got to meet Sonny James but I saw him in live performance on several occasions, the last time in Sarasota’s Van Wezel Performing Arts Center in 1972 (at the time locals referred to it as the ‘Purple Palace’ because of the predominant colors of the auditorium – I don’t know if that is still the case)

    At that show Sonny had a band member pull out the steel guitar and play it on several numbers. The steel had been replaced in his band for the last decade, replaced by the guitorgan
