    Nice find

I have no idea why Gail Davies never became a big star

Besides being a fiercely independent female producer (and this with the thinly veiled misogyny of the music business all over, not just in Nashville), I think it’s because she was too good.

I beg to differ. No one was ever held back in Nashville by being “too good.” But the first part of your statement was on point. Only a few ultra-talented folks bucked the system yet still became successful. Waylon & Willie lead that category. Gail’s independent attitude was not well accepted during the 80’s. It’s a shame because she is truly a most remarkable performer with deep respect for the roots of country music. Her talented son Chris Scruggs inherited her love of the genre.

She seemed to be quite popular for a few years in the early 80s. I remember her being played on the radio quite a lot back then. And then she just suddenly disappeared from view all of a sudden.

What I guess I meant is that the industry, and not just the country side of things, seems to just want things routine, predictable, and all-around mediocre, which didn’t seem to be what Gail was about, either as a very neo-traditional artist on her own or as a producer. They would rather have someone who does hackwork. And if it’s a woman….well, then all bets are off (IMHO).
