Excellent find of a great Waylon performance.

A few years later soul singer Joe Simon took the song to the top of the R&B charts for three weeks

A surprisingly close live recreation of Waylon’s studio recording. I’ve always thought that this song showed off the power and emotion of Waylon’s voice better than any of his other recordings. The RCA Victor single peaked at #8 in October 1967.

The released version was actually Waylon’s second recording of the song. The first arrangement was created by Jerry Reed and Harlan Howard on the spot when Harlan showed up at Waylon’s session with a demo of the then brand-new song. Waylon really loved it and felt a personal connection to the lyrics but was very unhappy with the overpowering musical arrangement chosen for him without his input. After that session when his displeasure was made known to producer Chet Atkins, Waylon was encouraged to re-cut the song with the musical backing that he wanted. Take a listen to that first version and see if you agree that Waylon’s slower and more soulful interpretation was superior.
