Waylon’s RCA Victor single climbed to #12 in early June 1967. Written by Mel Tillis who released this song as his first single for the Kapp label in 1966. Although that version failed to chart Mel’s high-octane 1975 re-recording for MGM earned him a #15 Billboard hit in early 1976.
When I first heard this song I was not familiar with the legal term “Mental Revenge.” I thought Waylon was singing “METAL Revenge” which made no sense to me. One day my mom gave me the lowdown on that term and then the pieces fell into place. I especially loved the harmonica/guitar harmony on the studio version as well as Waylon’s “kiss-off” attitude so aptly quoted by Hope.
I love this song. Also, Caribou, Maine is about 20 minutes from where I grew up, so it was a fun surprise the first time I heard that familiar unknown town mentioned in this song.:)
Great song that was recorded by many country artists as an album track. My favorite version was by the great Johnny Darrell on his 1968 album THE SON OF HICKORY HOLLER’S TRAMP
