Lynn Anderson’s death does come as an extremely untimely shocker for country music, especially given that “I Never Promised You A Rose Garden” was not only a huge #1 hit on the country chart, but it also hit #3 on the overall Billboard Hot 100 in February 1971. That huge crossover success meant that “Rose Garden” could be heard alongside hits like George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord” and Elton John’s “Your Song” on AM Top 40 pop radio.
