If i ever had to select a “perfect” country singer Marty Robbins would get my vote. He had the ability to sing almost any song in any style and make it sound natural. Too bad that he never received more industry awards during his lifetime. I was very glad that he received his Country Music Hall Of Fame Induction before he passed away even though he thought that he was too young for that honor.

I agree with you Ken about Robbins’ talent but I suspect that if rock & roll hadn’t wiped out the classic pop market that Marty would have aimed to be another Dean Martin or Al Martino – he certainly could have done it

        Paul,
I’d say that more about Ray Price–post ’50s–than Marty Robbins. Marty liked to play instruments in performance and write songs–something those old pop singers didn’t tend to do. And he was very into the cowboy/western music a la Frankie Laine.
Apparently, Robbins really liked Laine. According to Laine, Marty personally sent him “You Gave Me a Mountain” and urged him to record it–and it turned out to be a big comeback hit that rejuvenated his career. (Heck, I’ve seen clips of Laine singing that song on some TV show hosted by comedian David Steinberg and another one with Hugh Hefner!)

Marty was also a pretty serious stock car driver (I don’t think they called it NASCAR then.) And he did that while he had a heart condition that he was aware of, I believe.
If any country star of that era should get a full-length biography or even a movie, I’d say it’s Marty.

“Twentieth Century Drifter” a biography of Marty Robbins was published in 2012.

So agree. They made a movie about J Cash, Elvis and Buddy Holly and others, but I think Martys would be better. Maybe because Marty didn’t do drugs or die in an accident, but he sure was banged up in one. Please make a movie about Marty Robbins
