Hank Cochran and Vern also had a hand in writing this song. I have a feeling that their backgrounds, more so than Dillon’s, were the source for this homage to E.T, Hank and Lefty–and Sinatra!

I read an interview with Dean in which he said when he was writing with an artist, he tried to work in their voice and background rather than his own, so I think you’re right.

      Here it is:

“Set ’em up Joe,” is from the opening lines in Frank Sinatra’s greatest honkytonk–er, saloon–song, “One For My Baby (and One More For The Road,” written by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer. Cochran and Vern, who were both born in the 1930s, would have been eminently familiar with that song, which was originally from a Fred Astaire movie, and I think they were alluding to it in writing this song.

It’s probably a cliché to say it, but they don’t make ’em like that no more (sic), whether it’s “One For My Baby” or “Set ‘Em Up Joe”.
