Now there’s a true country singer! Johnny Rodriguez back in his heyday with a great Mickey Newbury song that just missed the top – it stalled at #2 for two weeks in Sept. 1976. Always thought that this was one of Johnny’s finest performances.

    Thanks Hope!

According to Record World this song reached #1. I liked virtually everything Johnny recorded on Mercury and this song was no exception. He jumped to Epic in 1979 and his sound changed – he had three top tens while there but nothing like the success of his Mercury years. This was Johnny’s last #1 on any of the three major charts – he had six Billboard #1s plus four more that reached #1 on Cashbox and/or Record World.

Johnny charted twenty songs on Mercury with eighteen reaching the top ten and only his cover of “Eres Tu” missing the top twenty (it is a beautiful tune, but the song is sung entirely in Spanish – that it reached #25 tells you just how lovely the song is)
