Not one of his bigger hits , but one of my favorite Roger Miller songs. Love the images the song conveys. There was only one Roger Miller

Nice to see Roger in this vintage clip from Johnny Cash’s ABC-TV Show. This song was his current single at the time this show was taped during the early Spring of 1970. The studio recording is actually quite a bit better than this live performance but as Paul said it wasn’t one of Roger’s big hits. Unfortunately it stalled at #36 in early April.

Definitely not Roger Miller at his best–More like Miller trying to be Tom T, Hall.
    Dang Me!

“Definitely not Roger Miller at his best–More like Miller trying to be Tom T, Hall.”

Nonsense. Roger Miller is without question one of the most original talents that we’ve ever seen. He’s never copied anybody. Roger has influenced dozens of other singers and songwriters.

Furthermore In 1970 when the Cash show was taped Tom T. Hall had been a successful recording star for less than two years so his influence on anyone could at best be described as marginal at that time. Tom T’s biggest and best songs were still yet to come.

Finally Roger did not write this song. It was created by Dennis Linde who also wrote Roger’s previous single “Where Have All The Average People Gone.”

I agree Roger Miller was a great talent. I just think this is one of his weaker songs. It does not play up to his talents for clever wordplay and vocal dexterity. For some reason, he doesn’t play his guitar in this performance–though I listened to the single on youtube and it has much better instrumentals. This song about the county fair strikes me as one that Tom T. Hall should have written–He’d have made it a lot better!
