Porter reached wayyyyyyy back in his archives for this one. This song was released as the flip side of his 1958 single “Haven’t You Heard.” Great instrumental breaks on this clip courtesy of fiddler Mack Magaha and electric banjo wizard Buck Trent.

    Thanks Hope!

For some reason, I associate this song with Charlie Walker, although I am sure many artists have recorded the song, including Ernest Tubb. Anyway, it’s a great song and this is a fine performance

You’re right. Charlie Walker recorded the song at his first Decca session in 1954. Though his single release failed to chart it remained a fan favorite throughout his career. The writer’s credit is attributed to “Joe McCracken” a pseudonym used by Leon Payne. Porter likely became familiar with the song via Walker’s rendition. Here’s that recording featuring the great Tommy Jackson on the fiddle intro:

Charlie Walker can stand up there with anyone. He even did a great cut on the Stones “Honky Tonk Women.” His “Greatest Honk Tonk Hits” CD has so many great songs that I can even forgive him for “Please Don’t Squeeze My Sharmon.”
