The proper title of this song is “I’d Walk A Country Mile (For A Country Girl)” from his 1967 RCA Victor album “Just Jim.” That LP also included his big hit “Pop A Top.”
Love Jim Ed’s voice but this is not one of his better songs. First time I heard this song I thought that the lyrics did not comfortably fit the melody. Listening to it again today I find that my opinion hasn’t changed.

I thought the same thing when I picked up a copy of the album in 1972 – it’s not a bad song, just awkwardly constructed

The song is something of a jumbled mishmash. I wonder if the “I’d walk a country mile…” line is an allusion to the “I’d walk a mile for a Camel” advertising campaign that was prominent then. That seems to have been a common theme in country music at the time, as with Buck Owens’ “I’ve Got a Tiger by the Tail” and Charlie Walker’s ridiculous “Please Don’t Squeeze My Charmin.”
