Sammi is remembered today for her one monster hit, but she made many high quality recordings – in fact, all of her albums are filled with good-to-great performances. Unfortunately, her record label (Mega) basically existed as a tax dodge and few of her records received proper promotion. By the time she got onto a better label, the iron was no longer hot

All of that strikes me as being a terribly common story in the record industry for an artist. But it is also instructive to mention that, at the time this song was on the pop charts (it peaked at #8 in April 1971), you heard it on pop radio alongside Janis Joplin’s “Me And Bobby McGee” (which Kris Kristofferson also wrote, with “Help”), the Temptations’ “Just My Imagination”; and Three Dog Night’s “Joy To The World.” You would NEVER have that happen today.
