A perect example of how country music went off the rails three decades ago. Barbara could sing great country songs when she wanted too but devolved into pop/shlock during the 1980’s. Though this song was a major chart hit at the time (#2 in Sept. 1984) and received massive airplay during that era I’ll bet few folks remember this song or give a care about hearing it today. I’ve actually always liked this one a lot. To my sixteen-year-old ears it was a great song. I’m not sure I would feel the same way if I were hearing it for the first time today, but it holds a certain nostalgia for me. I could forgive Barbara for delving too far into pop territory at times. It was better than when she went too far into R&B, which she frequently did in those days.

I agree with Ken – listening to this now, the song seems melodramatic and overproduced. I actually preferred her R&B covers to her forays into pop music but it wasn’t until her chart career stalled and she started recording for Capital that I regained interest in her music
