Great singer that unfortunately never really hit it big. Clifton Howard Vandevender joined Ray Price’s Cherokee Cowboys in late 1954 as guitarist/front man for the band and became Ray’s harmony singer both onstage and on record until early 1958. Howard had released solo records on Imperial in the early 1950’s and then for ABC and Columbia while with Price’s band but saw no success. The song in this clip was featured as one side of his only ABC Records single in late 1956. After quitting Price’s band he eventually left music for a long and successful career in the banking industry. Van Howard died in 2012.

I never heard of this guy–but this could be called the generic 1950’s country singer singing the generic country song!

I almost agree with Ken – I wouldn’t describe Van as great but he certainly was very good, and deserving of more success than he had. A few of his songs would show up on anthologies issued by random labels – I think that I have a few of them on some Columbia albums of the mid 1960s. It would be nice to have a full album of his performances

Paul – Van’s recordings would make a great Bear Family single disc if they could cross-license his songs from different labels and perhaps include a couple of his harmony recordings with Ray Price.

I had the pleasure of going to church with Van for many years and hearing him sing (gospel music, of course) was pure joy. On top of that, he was always such a nice man.
