Does anybody know the correct lyric (and what it means)?:

“And whose idea was it to hang these ferns,
This brand new bar don’t have a single _______

(The different Internet lyric sites give it as both “burn” and burr”–which don’t seem to make sense.
I thought it was “bird”–Like maybe the birds are supposed to eat the ferns??)

      Isn’t it ‘girl’?

I always thought it was “burn”… like the brand new bar doesn’t even have so much as a single cigarette burn on it.

          Michael–
Thanks–I think you solved it for me.
Your explanation makes sense–It’s those cigarette burns (and probably the customers’ initials and such carved into the old wood bars)–and “burn” rhymes with fern!

One f my favorite songs, ever – I’m always thought the word was “burn” – I had a front row seat in a small venue to hear Doug perform the song with just his own guitar as accompaniment and he clearly ennounciated the word as “burn”

I’m not much of a Doug Stone fan, but I’d include this song and “Pine Box” on any essential ’90s country compilation list!
