Tillis sings “My friends ask me ‘Buck, what’s wrong with you?'”
In every other version I’ve heard, including, of course, Webb Pierce’s, the singer throws his own name in there. (“My friends say ‘Webb, what’s wrong with you?’)
Does anyone know if “Buck” was ever actually a nickname of Tillis’s–privately, if not professionally?

I think Buck refers to Buck Peddy, an early associate of Mel’s and sometime “co-writer”

“I Ain’t Never” was a big hit twice – Pierce’s version spent 9 weeks at #2 in 1959 (according to Cashbox it reached #1) and then Mel took it to #1 for two weeks in 1972

    Interesting trivia, Paul!

Mell Tillis and Webb Pierce are listed as co-writers of the song. But I’ve seen a video of Pierce performing the song years later–it might be from the Wilburn Brothers’ show where Webb just says that the song was written by Mel Tillis. I guess he was just being honest.

Mel and his boys are smoking on this cut!
