Sad that Hawkshaw Hawkins did not live to enjoy his biggest hit record. Recorded on September 10, 1962 “Lonesome 7-7203” was released in early 1963 and entered the Billboard country chart just three days before he died in the plane crash with Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas and Randy Hughes.

The you tube version of the song linked to above is NOT the actual single hit, rather it is the original undubbed master recording. King Records added background voices for the single release. The undubbed version has been widely circulated on CD. An alternate overdub with a different vocal group arrangement was issued on the 1999 British CD “I’m A Rattlesnakin’ Daddy” from the Westside label (WESA 822). It was incorrectly labeled as the “Single Master” on the track listing.

So far the ONLY CD issue of the original hit version of Lonesome 7-7203 is on the 1963 volume of Time Life’s “Country U.S.A.” series (Time-Life CTD-11)
Oddly that CD has incorrect versions of three other songs – George Jones’ “Not What I Had In Mind” (LP version), Ned Miller’s “From A Jack To A King” (alternate version) and Johnny Cash’s “The Matador” (alternate version)

Here’s a link to the single hit version of Hawkshaw Hawkin’s Lonesome 7-7203. Enjoy.

I think “Boys ‘Round Here” is a strong contender for the worst song ever to reach #1 on any countrt chart.
