Catchy song from the “should’ve been a single” category. This was a track on Dolly’s 1977 “New Harvest First Gathering” album. It would have been a much better choice for a single than the boring & dreadful “Light Of A Clear Blue Morning” that barely hit #11. Many country radio stations played “Applejack” as an LP track after that single died. Dolly often performed the song in concert and on TV shows so it’s a mystery why it was never issued as a single.

I imagine it was never released as a single because she was moving full steam ahead in the pop direction around that time. I thought the song was included on the album as a concession to her country fans. But you’re right; it would have been a good single.

The only good song on an otherwise wretched album . I purchased the album when it came out, played it through three times then taped this song and traded off the album at a used record shop

I adore this song, and agree that it should have been a single. But I do have to disagree with others on “Light of a Clear Blue Morning,” which I consider to be among Parton’s best work.

I love “Apple Jack” and Iam surprised it was not released as a single. I also like Light Of A Clear Blue Morning”

I can see the light of a clear blue morning
I can see the light of a brand new day
Yes I can see the light of a clear blue morning
And everythings gonna be all right
    Everythings gonna be all right
    Everythings gonna be all right
    Its gonna be okay

    Sorry – I just don’t get it

That is just the chorus. It’s a song that I think of often when I’m going through a tough time and looking forward to getting through it.

That’s a song I think of whenever I have insomnia

I like how “Light of a Clear Blue Morning” gradually builds to a crescendo, as if she’s reassuring herself that things will get better and then finally believing it for the first time, and I think it has a really beautiful melody. But I can definitely understand how the many repetitions of the chorus might sink the record for some.

Alison Moorer’s version of “Light of a Clear Blue Morning” is fantastic as well, a much slower burn than Dolly’s. It isn’t going to change opinions for those who don’t care for the song, but I love it. Her version is on the Just Because I’m A Woman tribute album to Dolly.
