This song is associated with Carl Smith (and much later Moe and Joe) in country–and Frankie Laine in pop. I did not know that there was a competing country version.

Back in the 1950’s & ’60’s singers appearing on country music television shows would frequently perform popular songs that were hits for other artists that they did not record themselves. That’s the case with this Johnny Bond clip from the Town Hall Party show. “Hey Joe” was never a single for Johnny but it worked well on this program allowing series regular Joe Maphis to do the great guitar solo.

Kitty Wells recorded an “answer” song to “Hey Joe” with special lyrics created by Boudleaux Bryant that became her third top ten country hit in 1953.
