Love it. Now THAT’S country! Buck Trent’s electric banjo fills are just brilliant.

Original studio recording was made on November 11, 1966. Porter’s RCA Victor single peaked at #2 during the second week of April 1967. I was very surprised at the time to learn that Bill Anderson wrote this extremely dark song. Bill generally wrote love songs so it seemed rather out of character for him to create this sad saga of a man slicing up his cheating wife and her lover.

Bill Anderson’s a songwriter. Radio played death and cheating songs then–“Miller’s Cave,” “El Paso,” etc., so it’s not surprising he’d write one.” I think he’s still writing–or cowriting–hit songs now. Obviously, he knows how to adapt to changing tastes.
