This song was written by Joe Maphis, an extraordinary guitarist and talented entertainer himself. Joe usually performed this song with his wife Rose Lee and they generally took the song at a much faster tempo than this

Molly Bee was a big star on television and stage but not on records. She was actually prettier than this clip would suggest

Joe Maphis was inspired to write this song in the 1950’s while driving back to Los Angeles after an evening spent watching Buck Owens perform with the Orange Blossom Boys at the legendary Blackboard club in Bakersfield. Buck liked the amps turned up loud as he’d say people wouldn’t leave as long as the music was good and loud! (lol) I much prefer Joe’s and Rose Lee’s original recording to this languid affair and this song went on to be recorded by countless other country artists over the years including Vern Gosdin.

One of the strangest related choices was a single release of this song by Canadian tier 2 songbird Colleen Peterson in the US during the mid 1970’s. Colleen sounded quite a bit like fellow Canadian Anne Murray and the more pop-ish approach didn’t quite work.
