The original version of perhaps the most iconic truck driving song in country music was a #2 hit in 1963.

    This is fabulous and was deservedly a sensation. I definitely would have guessed it was #1.

    One thing that makes it so good is it sounds completely honest. I don’t know who wrote it or what Dudley’s background was, but you can tell that the writer–and even the singer, too–aren’t faking it. They have an intimate knowledge of the subject and they’re letting us in on it.

    The original version was on the Golden WIng label , a minor label that Dudley partially owned. The success of this song and its follow up “Cowboy Boots” led to major label Mercury signing Dave Dudley. Both songs would likely gone to #1 with major label promotion behind them
