A most underated singer with a superb voice.
(For our younger readers he’s also Lorrie Morgan’s dad) Sad to say that he passed away at the age of 51 in 1975.

For some reason the full length 1949 original hit version of this song is rather hard to find. Most George Morgan and various artist CD compilations feature one of George’s later re-recordings or a 1:28 edited version of the 1949 original with excessive reverb. The complete 2:45 hit version of “Room Full Of Roses” is on the excellent 1995 Rhino compilation “Hillbilly Fever Volume 3: Legends Of Nashville” (R2 71902)

The expansive Bear Family George Morgan box set also contains that full version as well as the Columbia remake.

George Morgan CDs outside of the Bear set are very hit or miss. His later recordings on Starday often are excellent but there really isn’t a good CD covering his hits on Starday. THe best set is the Gusto collection 14 GREATEST HITS, but even that set is woefully inadequate as it includes a bunch of remakes of the Columbia hits plus some covers of other artists’ hits

Speaking of George’s later recordings you can’t beat “Lilacs And Fire” from 1970 on the Stop label. Shoulda been a bigger hit. Great vocal performance by George.

Also enjoyed his Decca/MCA recordings. “Mr. Ting-A-Ling (Steel Guitar Man)” is a major favorite.
