This new country trio on independent label Nine North is likely to attract some initial interest based on its members’ illustrious relatives; Tayla Lynn is Loretta’s granddaughter, Jennifer Wayne is granddaughter of John, and third member Caroline Cutbirth is descended from Daniel Boone. But what really should be attracting attention is their music.
Their debut single (going to radio next week) is a lively slice of attitude which has enough commercial appeal to get radio play if their label had enough clout, while being rooted in country music, tastefully produced by Paul Worley, a man who knows how to add interesting textures to a record without overwhelming the artists. Tayla takes lead on this track and she has a distinctive and definitely country voice with a strong Southern twang and attacks the song, supported by sweet harmonies from the other two on the chorus.
The protagonist is less than pleased not to hear from the man with whom she shared a romantic interlude the previous night:
Last night he promised me the world and now I’m gettin’ nothing at all
Few excuses are going to be good enough to save him from her wrath when she finally catches up with him. Not only has he failed to call her, but he is ignoring her texts (21 and counting, rising to 22 by the end of the song). The exhilarating chorus runs through a list of possible acceptable excuses, most involving death or near-death experiences:
He better be dead as a doornail
Cold as a stone
Flat on a train track
Whoa
Face on the floor
Stiff as a board
Knock-knock-knockin’ on heaven’s door
He better be dead
Held hostage at gunpoint, his car hanging off a cliff, and being bound and gagged in a motel room are equally acceptable.
She digresses in the second verse to say she doesn’t like “little boys playing games” with her, as her anger grows. By the time she finally catches up with her love interest, she might not be the only one to wish he was dead.
I doubt if this entertaining track has much of a chance making its way onto radio playlists, but if it did get the exposure it deserved it could be a breakthrough hit. I’ll be interested in hearing what else they come up with.
Grade: A
Listen to the finished version here and see and hear a live rehearsal on the group’s myspace.
This song is already getting airplay on XM radio and many other stations nationwide. I love it! Your doubt about the it making its way to radio playlist is already unfounded! Stealing Angels are a talented group with more appeal than any other group in the world of Country Music right now. I think they are great !
chill girl they aint all that
I love this song!!! I have been following them for a while and I am hearing their song all the time on KNIX Phoenix!! It’s a smash!!!
Being played on XMradio doesn’t mean that it’ll have mainstream appeal. That’s supposed to be the point of satelite radio.
This is really good, lovin’ the twang and the song is a good one
I think this song is quality country, but seems like it could also be somewhat radio friendly
Love the Angels!
This is a decent song, but I think the line about having “texted him 21 times” should be canned because it makes the narrator sound like a flake.
i agree it sounds corny
Come on folks, compared to SheDaisy these gals are a bit of a joke. Their family lineage is the biggest thing these gals have going for them if songs like this are representative of their future output. Over the last 15 years or so quite a few groups featuring 2, 3, or 4 females as the lone vocalists (LBT doesn’t count) have been signed by Nashville labels and almost none of them had any real chart success (apart from SheDaisy or The Wreckers that is). Top 40 country radio listeners just don’t seem to care for groups of this type, even when they have real talent and the music is good!
Compared to SHEDaisy, no one is a joke — with the notable exception of BOMSHEL.
Last 15 years? You forgot the Dixie Chicks, the most successful group ‘of this type’ during that time frame. The Dixie Chicks arrived in 1997/1998.
Rick’s never minded rewriting history.
I can’t say that I really like this. Maybe it’s the quality of the recording though.
I really like this one, am plesantly surprised by it cause I thought they’d just ride their families coattails. I’m pretty sure Paul Worley’s new label which they are on (Skyville) could probably push this one up the charts a bit. I’m pulling for them half because I like the song and half cause I want to hear more females on the radio and charts.
I actually have heard several of their songs on XM/Sirius and have liked them all and did not know who their famous families were until I looked them up on the internet – I liked them first because I liked the music – could care less who their famous families were – I like this song and catch lines.
I pay a visit daily a few websites and blogs to read content,
