My Kind of Country

Country music from a fan's point of view since 2008

Giveaway: Patsy Cline Prize Package

UPDATE:  The winner is … Lanibug.  Congratulations and we’ll be in contact with you shortly.  Everybody else, thanks for commenting and keep coming back to check out the Gary Allan giveaway we’ll be starting shortly.  Thanks again for reading My Kind of Country.

Patsy Cline has been one of the most influential female vocalists in the history of country music.  The fact that her recording career lasted less than a decade is a testament to her pure talent.  That her recordings have stood the test of time and are still beloved some 50 years later is an even greater accomplishment.  So when we began discussing legendary artists for our Spotlight Artist series, Patsy’s was one of the first names that came to mind.  We’ve been working hard this month to get you acquainted with her catalog if you weren’t already, or just reminisce with you readers who already love these songs.

Be sure to check out all the Classic Rewinds that we’ve put up of Patsy’s limited television appearances.  And to get you started with your Patsy Cline collection – or maybe just add to it – we’re giving away a Patsy Cline prize package.   One reader will win:

Patsy Cline Gold 2 CD set

Sweet Dreams movie starring Jessica Lange on DVD

Certainly Patsy’s influence on artists from Loretta Lynn to Reba McEntire to LeAnn Rimes and everywhere in between can be heard in their own recordings.  But that’s just the tip of the iceberg to Cline’s far-reaching and lasting impact on the genre of country music.

To enter, tell us who your favorite singer who’s been obviously influenced by Patsy Cline is, and why. Commenting will close January 31, 2010 at 11:59 PM.  Good luck!

I would have to say it is LeAnn Rimes but I even see her influences in Ashley Monroe….

    Reba, no question.
But Kelly Clarkson is a close second:

Sara Evans and Patty Loveless have both acknowledged Patsy Cline as an influence, (as have many others) but it shows most clearly in Evan’s knockout rendition of Patsy’s “Imagine That” and in Loveless’ Patsy-style song, “Can’t Stop Myself from Loving You”. Also, I think Patty’s torch style in general owes a lot to the Queen of the torch singers, Patsy Cline.

Probably Mandy Barnett, more than any other singer I can think of . After that I cannot think of a close second although the influence can be heard in Connie Smith , Marsha Thornton, Reba McEntire and countless others

    I’d say Trisha yearwood.

Ha, I never thought about it that way but you’re right..Patsy WAS Loretta’s mentor!

I don’t hear a lot of stylistic similarties though.

  8. Kathy D January 15, 2010 at 8:54 pm

    Reba Number 1

  9. Carol January 15, 2010 at 9:56 pm

I like Leann Rimes because I can hear the intonations and inflections identically in her renditions.

  10. Sean January 15, 2010 at 10:01 pm

    Reba, without a doubt! 🙂

  11. Darcy B January 16, 2010 at 1:13 am

Oh yes Leann Rimes—–thanks for the chance to win.

  12. Cheryl W January 16, 2010 at 2:09 am

I would have to say Reba. Reba, like Patsy, has done tremendous things for country music, as a woman in a mens dominated genre. They kick some serious country music butts.

  13. Susan January 16, 2010 at 10:53 am

I’m thinking Emmylou Harris. But, though Patsy Cline influenced many, she was one of a kind.

  14. Lori January 16, 2010 at 11:17 am

For me it’s definitely Loretta Lynn…one legend leading the way for another true legend!

  15. Deedles January 17, 2010 at 11:58 am

    I would say Loretta Lynn.

  16. Brett Roberts January 17, 2010 at 7:14 pm

I would have to say Loretta Lynn or Emmylou Harris or Lucinda Williams

  17. dale schmucker January 18, 2010 at 10:30 pm

    loretta lynn. hands down

  18. Steve Capell January 19, 2010 at 4:27 pm

I would say Leann Rimes—– This would be GREAT to win!

  19. Nino January 20, 2010 at 7:36 am

    I would say Loretta Lynn.

  20. Deborah R January 22, 2010 at 6:38 pm

    Reba, Reba, Reba!

  21. Tom January 29, 2010 at 6:33 pm

    …loretta lynn.

  22. Chuck January 31, 2010 at 9:46 pm

I would have to say Loretta Lynn….mainly because who knows how Loretta Lynn would have turned out had it not been for Patsy’s influence and guidence. She may have imploded had it not been for Patsy taking her under her wing. Patsy kicked down a lot of doors for women in country music and she passed the torch on to Loretta in an unfortunate, but roundabout way to keep kicking down those doors … to pave the way for even more female country singers to follow in the footsteps of Patsy. Loretta was the bridge between Patsy and the singers of today like Reba.
