My Kind of Country

Country music from a fan's point of view since 2008

Country’s drinking problem?

hankfriends1Friday night is upon us. And for lots of us that means a chance to go out and shed some of the stress acquired during the work week. Well, I know for me it does. It’s almost taboo to sing about drinking and partying these days in country music. The songs that do slip through usually fit two categories: One is the trite redneck anthem. The other is a ballad that points up the ‘consequences’ and the importance of a 12-step program, complete with platitudes for daily living. But, to hell with those songs tonight.

To borrow a a phrase from Miss Emmylou (and/or Paul Kennerley), ‘tonight I want to do some drinkin’/I came to listen to the band …’ When I am drinking, two of my favorite artists to listen to are Hank Williams Jr. and Miranda Lambert. Bocephus is raw country at its finest, and Miranda is the next generation of honky tonk angel. You just can’t go wrong with a glass of Kentucky bourbon and some Hank Jr. or Miranda on the stereo.

What are your favorite drinking songs?

Here’s two of mine …

Listen to Hank Williams Jr. – ‘Stoned At The Jukebox’

Listen to Miranda Lambert – ‘Dry Town’

P.S. Drink responsibly.

Writer’s note:  This is a recycled topic, one I originally posted back in February.  Since I’m still drinking and listening to country music, I decided to re-post it.

    I love “Dry Town” =)

I actually woke up this morning with Emmylou’s “Two More Bottles of Wine,” specifically the bridge (“Sixteen hundred miles…), on my mind. So there’s your winner.

I’m still single and still listening to country music, so I’m commenting again on a Friday night.

You woke up this morning under a bridge with thoughts of wine? Wow, you must have done some serious partying last night!

(See how easily rumors can get started? 😉 )

Here it is, midnight, and I do have two more bottles of wine, Jacob’s Creek Chardonnay to be exact. It was on sale. Plus, it’s pretty good.

Anything by Whiskey & Co. pretty much fits the criteria.

“Pop A Top,” “Who’ll Buy The Wine”, “The Bottle Let Me Down,” “Wine Me Up” — just four of many great drinking songs.

“There Stands The Glass” – preferably by Webb Pierce, but also okay with Carl Smith, Ted Hawkins or Van Morrison

“Smoky The Bar” and/or “I See Them Everywhere” by the great Hank Thompson

Anything Ran does is fine by me.

There’s a tune by Robert Earl Keen (I think, though it could be another Texas singer) that goes something like “I listen to country when I drink” or “I listen to Hank when I drink”, “I listen to rock when I get high”, and so on. It bugs me that I can’t remember it because it just tears the top of your head off, to paraphrase Emily Dickinson. Beautiful and painful and everything a great country song should be. It’s a little bit like “Good Old Boys Like Me” in how it touches my soul.

    Anyone know it?

I think you might be talking about Robert Earl Keen’s ‘The Bluegrass Widow’. It has a line something like ‘we’d ride around and drink Texas Pride and listen to Bill Monroe’. Is that it?

      • Derrick January 5, 2010 at 1:23 pm

        Not it. Thanks, though!

I FOUND IT! It’s Jerry Jeff: “Hank Williams Tonight”

Lately I’ve been thinkin’, I just might quit drinkin’.
        Now I don’t know all-in-all.
I just might stay home, get drunk all alone,
And punch a few holes in the wall.

Dear Lord, this song is so beautiful and sad. I am tearing up right now just listening to it.

If you ask me, it’s hard to beat the Possum when it comes to drinkin’ songs. Songs like “Still Doin’ Time” and “If Drinkin’ Don’t Kill Me (Her Memory Will)” are some of my favorites.

Hag has also recorded some excellent drinking songs, like “The Bottle Let Me Down” and “I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink.”

I’m surprised a certain song by Garth Brooks hasn’t been mentioned yet.

    • Derrick January 5, 2010 at 12:44 pm

Garth is so obvious that it need not even be listed. LOL

“Straight Tequila Night” by John Anderson is a good one. No, a great one.

“Unwound” by King George — “she kicked me out of the house, and tonight I’m whiskey bound/I’m gonna beeeeeeeee the drunkest fool around. . .”

Also by George Strait, “Drinking Champagne” – feeling no pain, till early morning. . .

Thanks for the link, Derrick. That is a great country song.

Yes it is. I am buying it on itunes today — the whole “Live at Gruene Hall” record — so I never forget whose it is again. LOL

Oh, Texas, how I miss thee. . .
