What a cool collection. I could listen to that ‘Hinges On The Door’ instrumental all day long. Does that have lyrics?
Yes, Connie Smith recorded it but I couldn’t find her version on YouTube. I did find Amber Digby’s version, though:
Great stuff…My kind of country is laced and saturated with fiddle and steel.
I think that is the first time I ever saw a steel player sing, at least at the same time. I remember now the old Barbara Mandrell show where she played all those instruments.., amazing.
I picked up the new John Fogerty album today, “The Blue Rangers Rides Again…and this country album by the great rock star has more steel in it than most of what passes for country today…by far. Greg Leisz is quite the steel virtuoso, and Fogerty makes good use of his talents.
I thought the same thing; I can’t remember ever seeing anyone else sing and play the pedal steel at the same time.
Here’s another British steel player – like Barbara Mandrell she started out as a child prodigy.
The new Fogarty album is great. Other than the new Gene Watson album, it’s the best country album I’ve heard this year ,even though the repertoire is only about half country.
Too bad you couldn’t find clips of Jimmy Day, Weldon Myrick, Buddy Emmons or Lloyd Green – now those were great steel players !
There are a couple of YouTube clips of Weldon Myrick but the embedding is disabled. You can find them at:
Jimmy Day’s clip has the embedding disabled as well:
Ditto for Lloyd Green. Occasional Hope will like this one:
Here’s Buddy Emmons — pne you can actually watch from here:
“Occasional Hope will like this one”
It’s a lovely tune in its own rights, but I’d rather have the vocals too…
The Chicks were great in keeping the steel guitar in their music as well.
