Single & Video Review: Shawna Russell – ‘Should’ve Been Born With Wheels’

That’s right, a double review of a single AND its video! I’m feeling adventurous today I guess.

So I was looking at the CMT blog just now, and they posted one of their usual video posts (Click here for the video), and I saw the video for Shawna Russell’s new single, and I was very impressed.

Goddess, by Shawna Russell

First, I’ll start with the song itself. Shawna is telling about how since she was young she knew she would have to leave and hit the road in a car:

I never could’ve learned in college
Couldn’t keep my mind in gear
So I took the wheel with both hands
 And learned to steer”

She goes on to say that since she has to keep moving on she “Should’ve Been Born With Wheels”, hence the song title. It’s a very solid lyric, if on a topic that’s overused. I also think that the title is a little too long, seeing as it could have just been “Born With Wheels”. It gets the same message across, but rolls off the tongue easier. Anyways, I like the lyrics.  They aren’t really that special, but they are solid. It’s her voice that blew me away. Oddly enough, it flew to my mind that this is the kind of song I imagined for Crystal Shawanda, rather than the many dull songs that she’s stuck with.

Shawna infuses this song with a jolt of energy through her great performance, helping the song to go from just normal to being very good to hear. Shawna sings strong without screaming, and shows off her voice very well, giving this song just the right kind of roughness. She has such a great voice, and uses it very well here.

She also plays the guitar, and she does a great job. It’s interesting that she is one of the few current female artists that can really play the guitar, and I like it. She can really rock! The production isn’t very country, but has heavy drums and electric guitar, but not in a bad way. I really love the cool piano in the background, it’s a little jazzy and it works, making this a very fun song. It’s a cohesive sound that sounds good, but draws attention to her voice as well, making it balanced, so she’s not drowning behind the production. I would summarize the song in one word: Solid. The lyrics are good, the production is engaging, and the vocal is great, but the song still isn’t incredibly special, just very promising.

Now I’ll talk about the video. If you missed the link to it, click here to see it on the CMT blog.

The video is basically Shawna having car problems and having to hitchhike with random people to get to her show, the one in the video itself. She gets a ride with a large RV (It breaks down), an old lady in her souped up car, a motorcycling priest, and eventually she trades her guitar for a little boy’s bike, to get to her show. The video looks good, and it doesn’t hurt that Shawna is gorgeous no matter what she’s doing. I also like that she doesn’t try to look country or sound country to fit a mold, but she does what she likes to do and it works in the video.

It’s an entertaining video, and the “story” is interrupted with clips of the show she’s trying to get to, as if the story is a kind of flashback. She sure performs well, and you see her playing some mean guitar, as I mentioned earlier. The video is kind of frivolous, but it still is fun to watch and compliments the fun mood of the song. The video will be forgotten fairly quickly, but I think the song is definitely a keeper.

Overall, a good single, albeit not very country, but it’s better than almost everything I’ve heard on the radio recently. I think it has potential to be a hit, but if it does, it will take a while. The video is good, and compliments the song well, but the entire package isn’t very special, but I will keep my eye on Shawna for the future.

Grade: A-

    Chris,

I have been behind this artist for a while now. Her whole record is pretty interesting. Still, I have to disagree with you w/r/t the title of this song. “Should’ve Been Born With Wheels.” If you take out “Should’ve been” it implies that she was, in fact, born with wheels so it’s needed in the context of what the song is about.

    Nice work anyway…

I guess. It just seems to long to me, but I like simple titles I guess. xD

I really like her, do you know if her album is available as a CD still?
