The #1 ranked country song for the entire year of 1966 and David Houston’s biggest hit. A perfectly written song by Billy Sherrill & Glenn Sutton.

David had one of country music’s best voices and sounded as good in person as he did on his recordings. Unlike today’s male singers who couldn’t stay in key onstage if their life depended on it.

I agree that his voice (usually) sounded as good in person as on the recordings, but he didn’t seem to have a lot of stage presence. As I mentioned in my article, I saw him perform live on three occasions and I didn’t get much more out of his performances than I would have had I simply listened to his (admittedly) great recordings .

I saw David during the same period as I saw Buck Owens, Loretta Lynn, Merle Haggard and George Hamilton IV perform live – those folks could keep an audience tied up forever
