I love “Chrystal Chandliers ” and I love Chrley Pride too.
I like the song but it’s strange how the song has become associated with Charley Pride when it wasn’t even released as a single for him. The hit on the song was by Carl Belew who took it to #12 in 1965
Unfortunately Carl Belew’s great recording was not long remembered by most country fans. Charley Pride recorded the song for his 1967 album “The Country Way” but did not release it as a single. He performed it in his concerts and the following year recorded a live version for his “Charley Pride – In Person” album. (one of country music’s BEST live albums) The song became a favorite with his fans and continuing demand for the song by jukebox operators ultimately led to a single release on RCA’s “Gold Standard” 45 RPM reissue series in 1972 b/w “You’ll Still Be The One.” (The 45 issued the 1967 studio track) That was very unusual because that series almost exclusively reissued back-to-back single HITS for jukeboxes and consumers. It was rare for a song that had never charted to be released for that series. Those singles also found their way to country radio stations that added them to their oldies libraries to satisfy listener requests. At the first country station that I worked for in the early 1970′s “Crystal Chandeliers” was one of Pride’s most requested tunes at times overshadowing songs that had been #1 hits for him.
Title Trivia: Belew’s single and Pride’s “The Country Way” album titled the song “Crystal Chandelier” while Pride’s live album and the Gold Standard 45 titled it “Crystal Chandeliers.”
This brings up what could be an interesting topic: Songs associated with various artists that were actually hits for different artists. I think there’ve been others.
