Just restricting it to artists listed in the column to the left, I like–and I have loads of CD’s by–Jackson, B&D, Conway, Jones, Hank Jr. (not his current stuff), Cash, Whitley, some Rogers, Loretta, Dolly, Patty, Travis, Crowell, Tammy, Gosdin, Waylon and Willie. Is that enough names? I can add a bunch more from Jimmie Rodgers to Robert Earl Keen.

Ah yes, the early ’90s.
I remember Kathy Mattea put out some of the most treacly, annoying music this side of Billy Dean. “Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses,” was the smash, but “Where’ve You Been” was the quintessence of country radio drivel.

I didn’t realize that she headed to Nashville as early as 1978. She really did have a slow rise to the top, something that probably would not be allowed to happen today.
