Great performance of a song that charted for three different duos in 1955.
Canadian duo Myrna Lorrie & Buddy DeVal were first to chart the song. Their duet on the Abbott label peaked at #6 in January (Myrna Lorrie was one of the three co-writers of the song)
Ginny Wright & Tom Tall (not to be confused with Tom T. Hall) had the most successful version. Their single on the Fabor label peaked at #2 in April.
Red Sovine & Goldie Hill’s duet was released on Decca and peaked at #14 in May.
Tom Tall and Ginny Wright both had brief chart careers. Tom only charted twice – this song and “Bad Bad Tuesday” which charted in 1964. Ginny Wright also only charted twice, both times as a part of a duet. Almost exactly one year before this record was released, her duet of “I Love You” with Jim Reeves was released. It reached #3. Wright retired from performing while “Are You Mine” was still on the charts.
Seven or eight years ago Bear Family issued a nice CD collecting the 1950s recordings of both artists, together and alone.
