I never liked this version of the song. My generation learned it from Alan Jackson’s 1997 cover and I always felt it was much better for a man to sing.

If you had heard her version first you would think (as I do) that it was very odd to have a man singing a woman’s song. Alan did a nice job but I always think of Charly in connection with this song. She was very nice and very cute in person.
Charly’s recording was a favorite with DJ’s because at slightly over two minutes long with a fade ending it was a convenient song to use when you had to hit news at the top or bottom of the hour or a hard-timed break.

This live performance really doesn’t do justice to her recorded version of the song. The arrangement is inferior, her band isn’t as good as the studio pros used by Epic and her voice seems off on this particular evening
I really liked her recording, and while I felt the Alan Jackson cover was good, I still prefer the original
