Great clip from episode #47 of the Johnny Cash Show that aired January 13, 1971. I remember seeing that original broadcast and got a big laugh from the outrageous lyrics. Rather surprising that Cash would sing a song about cocaine on network television during the anti-drug Nixon era. Amazing that the ABC-TV network censors didn’t take issue with the lyrics even though they were not “pro” drug.
This is just one of dozens of songs that Cash sang on his TV show that have never been commercially released.
[Cash recorded an unreleased studio version on December 18, 1970] Keep hoping that Sony/Legacy will one day release more of those great TV show performances on CD and/or DVD. After the top selling “Best Of The Johnny Cash Show” DVD set was released in 2007 there was talk of additional Cash Show DVD’s but so far no new releases. The above clip is from a bootleg.
